Moving to London, looking for excitement!

The time has finally arrived... In 4 days time I'll be riding the tube and roaming the streets of London looking for somewhere to live and somewhere to work! And hopefully the excitement will follow :)

Since I'm travelling with my girlfriend Monique we decided London would be the best place for us to quickly find accommodation and both get jobs. There are a number of other cities in the UK we would have liked to try but it's really difficult to get the timing of things right when you don't have family or friends there to help get you off the ground. Having a permanent address is incredibly important for applying for bank accounts and NI numbers, so we really have to be there to get things organised, and time is money!

The house share situation in London seems to be pretty good (when viewed from afar, at least). On Gumtree there are dozens of flats going up each day within our price range and in Zones 1 and 2, and to increase our chances of finding a place quickly we're also going to a Speed Flatmating event next Thursday. Yes, it is what it sounds like, you get to meet heaps of people that are looking for flat mates or looking for a flat, so it should be fun.

As always when looking for developer jobs you come across some doozies that you can't help but laugh at. I found one that name-dropped ColdFusion (along side PHP), and then proceeded to list a bunch of technologies that would be required - some which didn't make much sense in context, and one in particular that hasn't really been defined or experienced by anybody yet:

"Additional coding - PHP, MySQL, SQL, JavaScript, LAMP, Apache, Coldfusion, software, applications, web, SQL Server, Linux, UNIX, Ajax, JQuery, RSS, JSON, Web 2.0, Web 3.0"

Classic...

On the ColdFusion side of things there seems to be quite a few permanent/full-time jobs going in London but not too many contract jobs. We want to spend around 6 months working in London so that we can travel again next summer to see some more of the world, which kind of counts the full-time jobs out (and technically I don't think you're supposed to work in a "permanent" position on a UK Working Holiday Visa).

I've just put my CV online so I guess I'll see if I get any bites from recruitment agencies. I should also say that I'd really appreciate any tips if a suitable CF Developer position pops up in the near future (my email address is on my CV), and likewise Monique is looking for Web Design work :) But enough of the self promotion.

One of the best things about moving to London will just be getting back into some kind of normal routine. After travelling for 6 months I've realised I miss sleeping at regular times and being able to cook nice healthy meals every night (not to mention relaxing with some Xbox 360 games!). I'm also looking forward to being able to attend CFUG meetings and other ColdFusion related events since I didn't have the opportunity to do so in Australia. I'm disappointed that I will miss out on seeing Porcupine Tree play at the O2 Arena this weekend though, I just missed it by a few days!

So, just a few more sleeps to go - I hope everything fits in our suitcases :)

P.S. ColdExt Beta 3 will be released very soon...

I envy your freedom...I would love to be able to go on an "adventure" like yours, but kids make that very difficult. I hope everything works out great for you!

If you like Porcupine Tree, can I assume you like Opeth as well (I prefer the latter)?

Pity you'll miss the Porcupine Tree gig. I saw them last night in Tilburg, NL and they were on great form.

All the best

@Troy: Thanks. It's a scary thing to pack all your stuff into storage and wander around on the other side of the planet, so I'm glad things have been going well so far. However I think the next 6-12 months will be another surprise altogether with work taking center stage.

I don't mind some Opeth songs (I realise Steven Wilson has produced a bunch of their stuff) but for me they're pushing the boundaries of how "heavy" my listening can go, mostly due to the vocals I think. I should give them another go though :)

@Cliff: I'm super jealous! I'm *in* the Netherlands now, but before I knew I would still be here the tickets were sold out. Tilburg is only 2 hours away on the train :P I saw them for the first time at the end of May at the PinkPop festival (NL) and they were amazing. Glad to hear they were solid as always!

Yeah, my son is lead guitar/writer/vocals in a VERY heavy band, so I learn all about the new stuff from him. He knows what I like, and turned me on to Opeth awhile back. He was just lamenting the other night about how Steven made the latest Opeth albums sound too much like PT (even though he likes PT). Opeth gets a bit "harsh" for me at times as well, especially the growling. But the entire album of Damnation is much more "calm", so check that out. My son even made me a "Opeth Mellow Mix" CD that I really love that has all the mellow stuff from their albums with a very nice song progression.

@Troy: Nice, I might grab Damnation then :) I was also thinking I should do some music related posts (music that you can code to, of course, haha) since services like Deezer make it easy to share online playlists that you can listen to... Maybe an entry for the weekends with a good half hour of music or something like that.

If you like PT & Opeth, you owe it to yourself to check out the polish band Riverside. Melodic, sometimes angst-ridden, with a definite PT/Floyd influence. They have 3 studio CDs available. The lead singer/bassist, Mariusz Duda released a solo CD last week called Lunatic Soul, which is also well worth checking out. I should point out that the band are friends of mine, but you should sill check them out, as I think it likely you'll really enjoy them.

@Justin - congrats on the move! I've just moved my wife and 2-year-old son to The Netherlands (see http://cfzen.instantspot.com/blog/2008/08/27/An-Am...), and love it so far after 3 weeks. BTW - if anyone's interested in a job in Holland at PeopleXS.com, let me know.

@Aaron: That's great. I think I took the "easy" route looking for work in the UK rather than Europe, even though almost everyone in The Netherlands speaks English very well. Maybe I might give it a go next year? :) Hehehe...

@Troy: Damnation is a gem... I had no idea Opeth had a whole album like this, it's really relaxed. Thanks for the recommendation!

@Cliff: You were spot on, I'm really impressed with the 5 songs that are on the Riverside MySpace profile. I think I might have to buy a couple of their albums :P And the Lunatic Soul teaser songs on the official site sound great as well.

P.S. Incase you guys didn't notice, I posted a couple of tracks from some Aussie bands:
